Hormone replacement therapy involves restoring estrogen (female hormone) to your body when your levels are diminished. Menopause is the most common cause of low estrogen levels. During menopause your ovaries (glands that produces eggs and hormones) stop producing estrogen and you no longer menstruate.
Women who have had their ovaries surgically removed have decreased levels of estrogen and experience the same symptoms and physical changes associated with menopause.
If a woman has an intact uterus, unopposed estrogens are associated with endometrial hyperplasia and carcinoma. Therefore, almost all such women should also be given a progestin. In women who have had a hysterectomy, progestins need not be added, and unopposed estrogens are most commonly used.

The ovaries are the organs that produce the eggs in the female reproductive system. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a syndrome in which the ovaries are enlarged and have several fluid-filled sacs or cysts. These cysts may look like a string of pearls or a pearl necklace. A woman can develop one cyst or many cysts. Polycystic ovaries are usually 1.5 to 3 times larger than normal. Women with PCOS may experience a number of other symptoms as well. PCOS is a leading cause of infertility and is the most common reproductive syndrome in women of childbearing age.
Birth control pills treat a few of the symptoms of PCOS. They usually bring on a period each month (though some women with PCOS do not have regular periods even while taking birth control pills) which is important for women who do not have regular cycles because lack of menstruation puts a woman at higher risk for endometrial cancer. Some women find that hair problems either lessen or stop getting worse while on the pill, particularly with Diane-35 or Dianette (which contains cyproterone acetate, an anti-androgen).
