Ascariasis is an infection which has a lot of parasitic roundworm called the Ascariasis lumbricoides. Ascariasis is the most common form or infection of the intestine. This is normally found in an individual who has poor personal hygiene, poor sanitation, and normally spreads in places where the human feces are used as fertilizers.
The eggs hatch and thAscariasisen once the individual consumes this they immediately release a lot of roundworms which are called larvae and these are found within the intestine. The larvae then move to the bloodstream to the lungs and then leave the large airway of the lungs. They are swallowed back and are taken into the stomach and then they reach the small intestine.
The larvae move through the lungs and produce a lot of uncommon form of pneumonia which are called eosinophilic pneumonia. Once they come back to the small intestine the larvae mature into small new roundworms The adult worms are found in the small intestine and here they lay the eggs that are found in the feces. These normally live for more than 10 to 24 months. It is said that around 1 billion people are infected across the world and it occurs in people of all ages. It is normally seen to affect children more than adults.
Ascariasis shows symptoms of bloody sputum, low grade fever, cough, shortness of breath, passing worms in stool, skin rash, vomiting worms, stomach pain, wheezing and has worms exiting either through the mouth or the nose.
There are many tests to find out the condition and these have abdominal x-ray, eosinophil count, abdominal x-ray, stool ova and parasites exam.
The treatment includes many medicines that kill or paralyze the intestinal worms which are parasites. These medicines are mebendazole and albendazole. These are drugs that should not be consumed by pregnant patients. Pyrantel pamoae is the most preferred medicine for all pregnant patients. If there is a blockage of intestine that has been cause by a lot of worms then one can use endoscopy to remove the worms or sometimes surgery is needed.
Normally people are seen to recover from the symptoms of the infection without any treatment but the condition surely allows the worms all over the body. Many complications could arise by the adult worms that move to many organs like the bile duct, appendix, the pancreas which either multiply or cause a blockage in the intestine.
Symptoms of ascariasis Albendazole
Complications come due to obstruction of liver secretion, hole in the gut and blockage in the intestine. It is important to call the health provider if there are symptoms of ascariasis. If you have traveled to an area which is risk prone then it is possible you could get infected.
Developing countries have a lot of hygiene and sanitation and this reduces the risk in these areas. In the areas where there is a regular disorder, preventive or prophylactic treatment with medicines for deworming may be used.
Thus Ascariasis is an infection which is caused by the Ascaris Lumbricoides, which is a large roundworm. The eggs of this worm are normally found in the soil that has been contaminated by the faecal matter of the humans. It is also found in the uncooked food that is contaminated by the soil which could have the eggs of the worm. The eggs hatch into larvae which enter the intestine and then reach the lungs through the blood stream. Then they come back to the throat and then are swallowed by the individual. The larvae then develop into adult worms inside the intestines. The female adult worm grows to around 30 cm in length and lays eggs which are passed into the faecal matter. The soil is polluted with the animal faeces and also with human excreta which contain the eggs and the entire cycle starts again. These eggs develop in the soil and then become infective after a couple of weeks. It remains infective for many years and months.
Ascariasis is normally seen to infect the children more than the adults.
