Question: I have pain in my tooth. I went to the dentist, he has advised me an x-ray of the tooth. I am not married but of marriageable age. People say that x-ray exposure is harmful to our body. Please let me know if tooth x-ray is harmful to my body, and that my body will be exposed to what dose of x-Ray? My teeth are not sparkling white, they have a yellowish tinge. Please suggest me any tooth paste or any other method to make my teeth sparkling white. How effective are whitening toothpaste?

Answer (by Dr. Chirag Semlani): Dental x-rays are one of the lowest radiation dose studies performed. A routine dental examination includes exposure to X-ray which is less than one day of natural background radiation. It is also about the same amount of radiation exposure from a short airplane flight. Proper shielding is also common, which makes the potential risk even lower. Shielding is not done often but is highly recommended for pregnant patient. Teeth whitening have become a common trend now in India also. There are many office and home remedies of doing so. If you want the shade to change into whiter one, dentist do perform a procedure called teeth bleaching. Its a expensive procedure, and hypersensitivity of teeth is the side effects noted, but with good outcome. At home you can use teeth whitening paste which will give good results but it’s not permanent you might have to repeat the procedure in few months. There are some fruits which work very good for teeth whitening for e.g., strawberries, raspberries, rubbing them on the teeth on regular basis will give good results.
