Dexa scan report showing osteoporosis of hip and spine – bones becoming brittle and fragile

My friend’s mom’s dexa scan report shows T score of -2.6 SD at the hip and -2.4 SD at the lumbar spine. She is not on hormone therapy, her mother died due to complications of hip fracture and her sister was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at the age of 60 years. What do you interpret according to  her dexa scan report? Please tell me if my friend’s mother needs any treatment  and that what life pattern she should adopt to have good health. What is the best plan of treatment for her?

Answer (by Dr. Naresh Kumar Agrawal): Dexa scan report shows osteoporosis of both hip and spine. It interprets a medical condition in which the bones become brittle and fragile from loss of tissue, typically as a result of hormonal changes or deficiency of calcium or vitamin D. To avoid further complications of osteoporosis like pain, stiffness and fracture of the spine and hip , she has to avoid forward bending of beck and back, heavy weight lifting and sitting on the ground. Take diet rich in calcium like milk and its product with vitamin D supplements. Consult orthopedician for further advice. Heat therapy and weight bearing gentle exercises must be done under physiotherapist guidance.
