Heartbeat sound and heart valves
Heaatbeat is the sound produced by heart during its various pumping activities. The heartbeat is produced when heart valves close. The heartbeat is also called as heart sound and cardiac cycle.
The heart has three types of valves:-
* triscuspid valve : the valve present between right atrium and right ventricle.
* bicuspid valve : the valve present between left atrium and left ventricle.
* semilunar valves : are two in number; present at opening of aorta in left ventricle and at opening of pulmonary artery in right ventricle, called as aortic semilunar valve and pulmonary semilunar valve respectively.
- stethoscope is an instrument used to hear heart sound.
- The heartbeat of normal human being is 72 beats per minute. plus or minus of 10 beats is also considered as normal.
- heartbeat produces two types of sound called lub and dub. lub sound is the first sound produced.
- during closure of atrioventricular valves. dub sound is the second sound produced during closure of semilunar valves.
- First heart sound or lub sound is called as S1.
- Second sound or dub sound is called as S2.
- Another sound produced in heart due to blood flow is called mummer. murmurs are usually physiological, but mummers are also pathological in conditions such as stenosis.
