We are as usual in the time of year when more we talk about horoscopes, predictions for the year is starting and astral influences on our lives. Add to this the applicants prophecies concerning imminent disaster more or less natural “order the plural is intentional 😉 of the world”, and so forth. A very complex subject, but also very interesting that there is the starting point for a discussion, with the help of Dr. Mariacandida Mazzilli, psychologist, psychoanalytic psychotherapist, on the theme of popular credulity, horoscopes, superstitions in general .
The horoscope is still the most widely read book of daily, weekly, monthly, on the internet . why is there this need to believe in horoscopes, or at least read it (and then maybe say I read it but do not believe it .)?
“I know that is not true but I believe”. And ‘this is often the attitude of those who can not help but read your horoscope before an exam or an important appointment. Give importance to something “supernatural” protects from fear of the unknown, as if believing that there is a mysterious power to control events would make it easier to keep anxiety at bay and all the anxieties related to the concerns. The horoscope studies the position of the stars at the birth of a person and throughout the year, in order to delineate the personality and, above all, to predict the future. And so there are daily horoscopes, monthly, annual or “custom” (which would seem prepared especially for us).
Recognize in the features “specific” to a zodiacal sign (favorite color, shading character, affinity with other signs or elements such as water, air, earth, fire) can help you feel more confident, to feel a sense of belonging and identification. And even though common sense suggests that impulsivity can hardly be considered the exclusive prerogative of Aries, born under that sign will recognize that trait in itself (as well as those born under the sign of Libra will probably tend to emphasize their unflinching sense of Justice ).
Personalities are like palettes that capture all the colors: what distinguishes one from the prevalence of one color or another, and the many shades. Just approach with a minimum of reasonableness to read horoscopes of the many that fill the pages of magazines, or television broadcasts, to realize the absolute generality of the weather, or even the total discrepancy from newspaper to newspaper. But for many people it is hard to read the horoscope in a neutral way, as they are prepared to adapt it to interpret what they are experiencing, or what they would wish to live. All items clearly “outsiders” are removed, filtered.
In fact we will never find a horoscope can tell us whether we will pass an exam or if tomorrow we will be fired from their jobs. More likely the prediction will be a general promise of “improvement” in the workplace, or perhaps in a recommendation to pay attention to health or the promise of some exciting news soon. In the latter case, the horoscope can have the same function as a tale told to a child’s dreams and softens them tinged with hope.
The horoscope is read, more or less equal, people from different social backgrounds, education level, age, or so it seems. You can draw a profile of the person who is predisposed to believe in horoscopes than those who do not believe in the horoscope?
There are sides of the identity that refuse to rely exclusively on rationality and reason. There are aspects of the character they prefer the contact with the irrational, with the dreamlike, spiritual or divine. Since ancient times of questioning, oracles or stars to find the time to cultivate the land or face a battle. Relying on the supernatural can be a protection against fear of the unknown: it is a relief to think we can give in this way a sense of everything that happens. But the risk has become its prisoners, away from reality and feel “deresponsabilizzati”. In outlining the profile of the typical “fan” of horoscopes, rather than economic or social distinctions, can detect the particular time of life through a certain period. Lovesickness, financial problems and diseases are some pains that face counting on their strengths, self-questioning, stimulating the ability to know (the only tool that offers a chance to read in their future). Others prefer to interview the stars or the cards to find a way out of pain. Magicians and fortune tellers invade (unfortunately) the mass media, relying just on the fragility of this type of people. So we must consider the horoscope page only waste paper? No, if the reading is a healthy excuse to play down or play with friends, daydreaming about the future.
Last question. With some regularity is announced the end of the world, and many believe, it seems there is indeed a pleasure in believing to a ruinous event. Now there is talk of 2012. here too, because people are so willing to believe this kind of weather?
The apocalyptic prophecies have always fascinated man. In front of them was forced to take more than ever aware of his helplessness and insecurity of existence and so, paradoxically, talk about the end of the world in a certain day, may even help to control their own fears. Infinity, eternity, the sense of chaos, can scare and the idea of an “end” expected order and can help give a sense of accomplishment, gathering all the troubles in one place.
Thinking about the end of something but we also refers to another deep thought: the fear of death. The loss of a loved one can plunge into painful agony, in the belief that they can never live without the other. The idea of virtual collapse staff can easily be associated with that of the collapse of everything that is around. Are strong feelings that are later denied elaboration of mourning, can set in motion the machinery of survival without the other. In the thoughts of those who are attracted to apocalyptic omens check always, sooner or later, the idea of being able, somehow, to survive the catastrophe.
Thinking the Apocalypse could conceal a desire for change, a sort of “final solution” from which there can arise a new world, more harmonious, effective alternative to the current one and a reality of disappointment and fatigue. Change can be frightening, it can be very difficult to implement: big thoughts, catastrophic, the mind can be a catalyst for energy. And to think of it often deeper changes in life occur just after “earthquakes” in-house (like a panic attack or end of a relationship).
