What stresses you out? Work or your pain in the “behind” boss? Bills? Love life, or lack of? All of the above? As you get older, there are about a million different things that can add up- from morning traffic to an over cooked dinner. If wrinkles or gray hair is one of them, then you are in a vicious, VICIOUS, cycle.
It is true, stress actually ages you. Not only does it speed up the wear and tear of a whole lot of areas around your body, it actually makes you look much older than you really are.
Sure, there is always a tendency to turn to comfort food. But remember, unless you are blessed with the metabolism of a model (purging set aside), “a moment on your lips, forever on your hips”. That Krispy Kreme may just come back to haunt you. Again, another vicious cycle you definitely don’t want to get stuck in.
So unlike going on a binge drinking session or lighting up a ciggie, here are some ways to fight stess- no strings attached.
Not only will this relax you, but it does wonders for your health too-it improves circulation and gives your immunity a boost.
2. TAKE DEEP BREATHS
So you may not be able to strike a yoga pose with a pile of paper work on your desk, but taking deep breaths may just be the next best thing. This has a relaxing and rejuvenating effect. Inhale, count to five, exhale, count to five. Go ahead and say “wooosah” if you like.
3. GO FOR A WALK
If you can escape the hustle and bustle and take a refreshing walk, by all means, do so. Although a quiet path with a little brook beside it may be ideal, good luck finding that in the city. Whether in a semi crowded park or even just a couple of times around the block, the whole point is to take your time, enjoy your stroll, and relax.
Since you have already taken a walk, or at least considered it, then might as well do it regularly. Exercise is a big stress buster. Sure, if you have been allergic to the treadmill up until now, it may be hard at first, but just like everything else, it gets better in time. Not only will you feel younger, you will look younger too.
No matter how big or how small your problem may be, take the time to laugh. Studies have actually shown that laughter boosts up the immune system. It may not exactly be the “best medicine” as the saying goes, but it certainly does help in the prevention part.
6. GET A MASSAGE
You know you deserve it. Go ahead and make that appointment. Nothing quite relaxes you like a good old rub. Getting someone to actually pop those nodes will be worth it.
7. ENJOY A NICE SOAK IN THE TUB
Okay, if your schedule forbids you from heading to the spa, then run a nice warm bath at the end of the day. Light a few candles, play some soothing music, who needs the spa in the first place? (but seriously, go back to number 6.)
Worrying won’t get you anywhere. If you can do something about it, then don’t worry. If you can’t do anything about it, then what is the point? Everyone needs a distraction. Getting lost in a good book is a great one.
9. ENJOY A MOVIE
Reading isn’t your thing? Enjoy a movie instead.
Nothing beats a good night’s sleep. It is the ULTIMATE way to relax. So go ahead and hit the sack and ditch the late night show.
