I brush my teeth daily with Colgate toothpaste. My mother says that my mouth smells bad. I brush my teeth several times a day but after few hours my mouth gives bad smell. Why is foul smell coming from my mouth? Does eating any special food item or avoiding any food will help me in getting rid of this bad smell? Please let me know. What other measures can I take for this problem while going out? Should I change the toothpaste? Please guide me.

Answer (by Dr. Chirag Semlani): Bad breath or Halitosis is one of the common oral problem. Brushing, flossing, use of mouthwash, cleaning tongue prevent bad breath.
The micro organisms in your mouth feast on food and debris, producing sulphur compounds that cause bad breadth. Food that cause bad breadth – onions, garlic, tea, coffee, smoking, alcohol, aerated drinks etc. Food that prevent bad breadth- fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C (oranges, lemon, apples, bell peppers, broccoli), sugarless gums, herbs and spices (cardamom, clove, cinnamon, parsley, mint, etc.), yogurt etc. You can use mouth wash for special occasion when you want to go out. Changing toothpaste won’t help much, more or less all the paste have same composition. I won’t go with particular brand but which ever suits you, you should use that.
