How to start a sugar addiction detox for better health

Too much sugar is also thought to contribute to many diseases like diabetes. So quitting your sugar addiction or at least cutting down is something to aim for. But how ? Here are some tips on how to start your sugar addiction detox.

1.Get rid of all the sugary items in your fridge and larder.

Once you have made a commitment to quit sugar, a practical act that makes it very real is to get rid of all the sugary items in your fridge and larder. We are talking about the condiments and naughty treats that are stacked with sugars. This also includes sugar substitutes too. Be strict and toss them. It will reinforce your desire to give up sugar.

2.Finish the sugary foods first.

If you don’t like to waste food, then finish the sugary foods and transition to a healthy grocery shopping list. If you have no idea what a healthy grocery shopping list is, you could hire a dietician or simply do your own research. Some people even get their dietician to shop with them, at least for the first few times until they get the hang of it.

As a primer, you want to go for the most natural, unprocessed foods as possible. Fresh meat, fruits, fish, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and things like that. Use olive oil as a substitute for your salad dressing. Balsamic vinegar is also a good alternative.

3. Take an active interest in what you eat.

Fresh fruits are one of the best!From this point, you want to start taking an active interest in what you eat rather than just eating whatever takes your fancy. This means eating well balanced meals. Having a proper combination of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates is important. Fish and eggs are good sources of proteins. Avocado and nuts are healthy sources of fats. And beans and veggies make good sources of carbohydrates.

4. Prepare your healthy snacks ahead of time.

You may well get cravings for something sweet once you give up. In this case make sure you are well prepared. Fresh fruits and vegetables should be cut into snack sized portions so you have something to fall back on rather than a chocolate bar snack.

5 Get 2 servings of fresh fruits a day.

Fresh fruit is a great way to wean yourself off sugars. They contain fructose, a natural sugar but plenty of other things that benefit the body – antioxidants and vitamins being two examples. Indeed, even thought you may be swearing off sugars, it’s processed sugars that you should be targeting. Eating fruit in moderation should be part of your well balanced diet.

6. Consume the equivalent of 8 glasses of water a day.

This is the best cleanser your body could have. It helps eliminate your body’s wastes and toxins and promote healthy glowing skin. Try to have a bottle of water handy when at home or work and take a swig whenever you may crave something else that may involve sugar.

On that point, if you are in the habit of drinking heaps of cups of tea or coffee during the day, replace it with water. It’s okay to have a couple of cups a day, especially in colder weather, but reduce the amount of sugar you put in these beverages until you find the taste sickly sweet even with half a teaspoon. Then cut it out altogether.

7. Go to the Gym or get some other form of regular exercise.

For a start, the exercise is good in many ways but it can also provide you with another “high” of sorts with an endorphin rush. This is a pleasant feeling after exercise that will take your mind of consuming a sweet snack.

8. Get enough rest and sleep during the initial giving up period.

Sugar addiction detox is challenging. Nevertheless, just like any of life’s major endeavors, this is a mind over matter thing. Once you put your mind into it, there’s no reason why you cannot achieve it.

Make sure you get 8 hours of sleep a night to set up up right for the day to come. People that don’t get enough rest can be stressed and irritable which can lead to temptation. And this also relates to the last point.

9. Never do it if you have a heavy workload.

If you can plan it, don’t quit sugar or any addiction really, if you think you are likely to be busy at work or in whatever you are doing. This can only lead to stress and people return to their old favorites when they are stressed out. If you are going through a stressful experience, like a relationship breakup or such like than it goes without saying that you have enough on your plate without trying to quit an addiction.

Of course this advice relates to quitting cold turkey. This is quite an aggressive way to quit and may suit your personality but another way to to slowly remove sugar foods from your diet until you find that there is very little sugar in your diet. This may be a better fit for your personality. There is more than one way to quit provided you have set yourself that goal and stick to it.
