Librium (chlordiazepoxide HCl). The very first of the benzodiazepines. There have been a few reports of side effects with Librium, including menstrual irregularities, nausea and constipation, extrapyramidal symptoms, as well as increased and decreased libido. The side effects usually go away with a dosage decrease. The initial dose is 5mg taken 3 or 4 times a day and may be increased, as required to 25 mg taken 3 or 4 times a day. For severe alcohol withdrawal the maximum dose is 300mg a day. Librium has a half-life of 24-48 hours. ICN.
