Meconium aspiration treatment

Meconium aspiration:-
Meconium aspiration is the disorder seen in neonates. ” Inhalation of the first fecal matter (meconium) by the baby is called as meconium aspiration”.
Meconium aspiration is also called as meconium aspiration syndrome i.e MAS. Is usually occurs when child is stressed in the womb, due to unfavorable internal environment or during delivery.
Treatment of meconium aspiration:-
- Suctioning the baby’s mouth as soon as the head comes out(during delivery) is the best way to reduce risk of meconium aspiration.
- When baby already inhaled meconium and have distress endotracheal suctioning is needed. Till confirmation of no meconium in respiratory tract the procedure is need to be done.
- Immediate oxygen supply is needed to prevent cyanosis.
- For continued treatment the baby is taken care in neonatal intensive care unit.
- Sufficient oxygen supply using oxygen tent or any other convenient methods.
- If needed mechanical ventilation is needed. ( inflating lungs).
- Antibiotics are given to treat and prevent infections.
- Body is warmed according to infant need using warmer.
- Careful physiotherapy such as tapering on chest is done to loosen the meconium adhered to lung tissues.
- Providing proper nutrition is also essential.
