I have two children. They are 12 and 15 years old. Both of them are healthy. I am taking them to a doctor for regular health check-up but I have never taken them to a dentist .They do not have any problem in their teeth. Is it necessary for them to have check-up done by a dentist? Do we need to go to the dentist even in the absence of any problem? How is it useful for their health? How often and till what age dental check-up is needed?
Answer (by Dr. Chirag Semlani): As it’s always said prevention is better than cure, it’s best if you take them for regular dental visits even if they don’t complain about their teeth. Cavitation sometimes doesn’t alarm till the tooth is deeply decayed, so to avoid severe dental pain and discomfort caused by deeper decay, it’s better to get the check up and treatment done. It’s better a dental check up is done every six months, but may vary for patient to patient. For some patient with bad hygiene and early decay problem, dental visit should be every two to three months.
