Omega-3 Fish Oils. There has been all of one double-blind study on the Omega-3 Fish Oils and everyone is hoping they will be some kind of “cure.” Well, they’re not. That is not to say they won’t help. I take them, and I think they’ve allowed me to keep the dosages lower for my regular meds, and that’s about the best you can hope for. The fish oils (and it must be the fish oils, there are too much contradictory data on flaxseed oil) are promising as an add-on mood stabilizer to help lower dosages, and thus reduce side effects of more traditional medications. You need to take 3,000 to 5,000 mg a day of EPA and DHA combined. Not 3,000 to 5,000 mg of fish oil, that would be too easy, but of its “active ingredients.” If you get some decent capsules, that’s eight to ten capsules a day. The bulk oil is cheaper. As for brands, I was all about Twinlab, being independently lab verified to have in the capsule what is on the label, but evidence from a variety of sources, including Consumers’ Reports, indicates that the house brands of WalMart and Sam’s Club are just as good. Nordic Naturals sells an orange-flavored bulk oil that gives you a lot of bang for the buck. Any oil that’s not in a capsule needs to be refrigerated in the store and in your home. There’s still debate about ratios of EPA to DHA and just how the hell the Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids make a difference, but the truth is there haven’t been enough studies to know one way or the other. It’s cheaper to get more EPA than DHA because it probably comes out of the fish that way, and what little data there are indicate that you want more EPA than DHA anyway. The only known side effects, for us, as these are the original beneficial effects that sold the supplements, are lowering of blood pressure and blood thinning, so be careful if you’re already taking meds that do that or have problems in those areas. Initial dose is 3,000mg of combined EPA and DHA, however you manage to get that. Like any psychiatric medication it’s best to work up to that dosage and not start at 3,000mg. Look closely at the label to make sure you know how many capsules or teaspoons are involved to get how many milligrams of EPA and DHA. Can be taken with or without food, although many people find it easier on the tummy to take with food. If you’re burping strongly flavored fish burps, it’s not the taste of mental health, rather an indication that you’ve got some rancid fish oil and need either another brand or store.
