Paget’s Disease is a condition in the bone that is mainly dominated by the normal remodeling process of bone being in total disorder. The normal bone has a group of forces that help to lay down the bone and also take up the old bone. This is called remodeling and is needed for maintaining the levels of calcium in the blood. When the bone is affected by the Paget’s disease, then the remodeling of the bone is completely disturbed and is not totally synchronized. So as a result the bone is abnormal and is enlarged and is not as brittle and dense and is completely susceptible to breakage.
Paget’s disease is seen to affect the skeletal structure of the adults. It is said that at least 1% of the adults in the United States of America have Paget’s disease. Juvenile Paget’s disease is a very rare condition found in the children. Paget’s disease is also called osteitits deformans.
It is exactly not known the causes of Paget’s disease. There have been many genes that are said to be associated with the condition. So the Sequestrosome I gene on Chromosome 5 is identified as a strong cause for the cause of this condition. The virus infection is sometimes seen to trigger the condition of Paget’s disease in people who have inherited the tendency of the gene to have this problem.
Normally Paget’s disease is seen not to cause anPaget’s diseasey problems and is noticed when the X-ray tests reveal this. But Paget’s disease can result in bone pain, arthritis, fracture, deformity and such conditions. The pain during the Paget’s disease is normally seen in the affected place and the most common bones that are affected by this disease are seen in the spine, the pelvis and the collarbone, the skull and also the upper arm bone.
The symptoms of this condition mostly depend on the bones that are affected and the way the disease has progressed within. If the bones are enlarged then the nerves nearby are pinched causing a lot of numbness and tingling. Legs could bow and the hip and the knee involvement could cause arthritis, pain in the knee or the hip and also a lot of pain here. The person limps also with this problem. He also suffers from loss of vision, headache, and also hearing loss. This is normally seen if the bones of the skull are the affected parts. With the Paget’s disease increasing these days it is seen that it could also result in a congestive heart failure due to a great increase on the functioning of the heart.
The prognosis for Paget’s disease is that the treatment has to be given and if it is given before the bone has undergone any change then it is better. Paget’s disease is seen to affect the spine mostly and also the lower legs, thighs and the pelvis. The symptoms are very slow to be sighted.
Paget’s disease is not cancer and the disease is not seen to spread to the normal bones. The treatment is such that the disease can be controlled and the symptoms could be lessened but the treatment does not totally cure.
It was Sir James Paget who discovered this disease and he described the existence sometimes in the year 1877,and he also discovered that the worm that causes this trichinoisis is the one responsible. Thus he along with Rudolph Virchow are the founders of this pathology.
The pathogenesis of this Paget’s disease is seen in three stages which are the Osteoclastic activity and the mixed osteoclastic osteoblastic activity and the exhaustive stage.
There is a marked increase in the bone resorption in special areas and these are normally caused by large osteoclasts. These are normally seen in radiology examinations and then there are seen in the longer bones.
Sir James Paget said that the disease is due to an inflammatory process and research is on for this.
