Paleo diet: forbidden foods list

Remember, the paleo diet is more than just “eating like a caveman” but also NOT EATING what a caveman wouldn’t. And unfortunately, it’s a long list. So the next time you’re not sure if the food on your plate is “primitive” enough, use this list as your go to guide.

Paleo Diet: What NOT To EAT

PROTEIN:

  • Legumes, beans and lentils
  • Soy
  • Tofu
  • Peanuts
  • Vegetable Protein
  • Meat prepared with the following: Grains, Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Seed Oil.

But every once in a while, you can indulge in:

Cured meat:  Bacon, Sausages, Ham

FAT:

  • Vegetable oil and seed oil: Canola Oil, Soybean Oil, Corn Oil, Sunflower Oil, Grape Seed Oil, Peanut Oil, Cottonseed Oil, Safflower Oil
  • Shortening
  • Margarine

But every once in a while you can indulge in:

Nut oils (except peanut)

PLANT FOODS:

  • Wheat
  • Barley
  • Rye
  • Oats
  • Rice
  • Corn
  • Amaranth
  • Quinoa
  • Buckwheat
  • Breakfast Cereals
  • Granola Bars
  • Oatmeal
  • Tortillas
  • Pizza

Basically anything that’s baked: Bread, Cookies, Cake, Pastries and the like

But every once in a while you can indulge in:

Nuts: Almonds, Walnuts, Hazelnuts, Macadamia Nuts
The butter or the nuts mentioned above
Seeds: Sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds

DRINKS:

  • Alcohol that contains gluten
  • Soft drinks
  • Juices
  • Sugary Beverages

But every once in a while you can indulge in:

Gluten Free Alcohol: Bourbon, Brandy, Cognac, Gin, Rum, Schnapps, Tequila, Vodka, Whiskey (such as Crown Royal and Jack Daniels), Wine (and sparkling wine or Champagne)
Coffee

OTHERS:

  • Sugar
  • Artificial Sweeteners
  • Chemical Ingredients

But every once in a while you can indulge in:

Dark Chocolate
Unprocessed Sugar: Raw Honey, Maple Syrup
