Phytoceramides: what you need to know

The “stay young” industry seems to be continuously growing big as people continuously don’t seem to want to grow old, or at least look the part. So endless products naturally seem to be popping out of nowhere- wrinkle free this, softer skin that.

phytoceramidesBut remember, don’t be too quick to jump on just any beauty bandwagon you see. Make reading a habit and do a little research first. One relatively new anti aging supplement (or at least new for me) are Phytoceramides. I came across them rather recently, didn’t know what they were, (scenario sound familiar?) and decided to look them up (might be the same reason you’re reading this right now!). Well, this is what I found. Read on and learn for yourself… ☺

What Are Phytoceramides?

Let’s break it down, shall we? PHYTO means PLANT. No brainer there. But what the heck are CERAMIDES?

According to wiki:

“Ceramides are a family of waxy lipid molecules. A ceramide is composed of sphingosine and a fatty acid. Ceramides are found in high concentrations within the cell membrane of cells.

Ceramide is one of the main components of the epidermis layer of human skin. Together with cholesterol and saturated fatty acids, ceramide creates a water-impermeable, protective organ to prevent excessive water loss due to evaporation.”

So basically, this is a lipid that first of all creates a barrier of sorts that protects your skin from infection, secondly, it keeps your skin moisturized and plump, and third, it even acts as a signaling molecule. It signals something called apostosis, which programs a cell to die.

As the years add on, natural ceramide production tends to drop. Relating this to your skin, reduction of ceramides leads to dry skin, wrinkles, and even dermatitis.
Now that you have an idea of what ceramides are, put two and two together. PHYTO (plant) plus CERAMIDES (the lipid that’s great for your skin).

Phytoceramides are pretty much ceramides (or at least the equivalent of) that are derived from plants. Most phytoceramide supplements actually come from wheat.

The Beauty Benefits Of Phytoceramides

Phytoceramide supplements have been believed to be a great anti aging pill. As mentioned earlier, it is good for your skin. To be more specific, here are the top skin benefits of taking phytoceramides.

1. Moisturizes skin from within
2. Prevents/reduces fine lines and wrinkles- remember, dry skin is a sin and the root of all wrinkles!
3. Reduces Sag
4. Helps treat sun damaged skin

Are Phytoceramide Supplements Effective?

Although it has even been called the “magic/miracle” pill by some, don’t expect results in a snap. It will take about a month of taking a 350 mg capsule a day before you see the effects.

But to really make the most out of it and speed up the whole “look younger” process, it has been advised to pair your phytoceramide supplement with Vitamin C- preferably a topical application rather than an oral intake as it has been proven that applying Vitamin C on your skin directly works up to 20 times faster and is therefore more effective.

Are Phytoceramides Safe?

Two words to confirm: FDA Approved. Yes, phytoceramide supplements are safe. However, those people with gluten sensitivity should consult with a doctor first and maybe even look for an alternative.
