Pulmonary edema : causes and treatment

Definition:-
Accumulation fluid in lung tissue is known as pulmonary edema. Swelling occurs due to collection of fluid. pulmonary edema is usually due to cardiac failure and also due to direct injury to lungs, such as damage to lung parenchyma.
heart related causes are:-
* congestive heart failure,
* left ventricular failure,
* valvular diseases of heart,
* cardiomegaly,
* uncontrolled hypertension,
* kidney disorders,
* defective cardiac function due to myocardial infarction,
other causes of pulmonary edema are:-
* inhalation of toxic gases,
* direct injury to lung tissue,
* untreated pneumonia and other infections.
* using some medications,
* living at high elevations,
* fluid aspiration,
treatment of pulmonary edema:-
* provide adequate oxygen to the victim,
* absolute bed rest with proper positioning.
* provide mechanical ventilation if needed.
* treat underlying causes such as cardiac diseases, renal diseases etc..
* loop diuretics such as furosemide or bumetanide are the best drug for treating pulmonary edema.
