Health QuestionsCategory: MedicationsChewing my tongue….b/c of adderall?
paulajayne asked 3 years ago

I’m trying to decide if this  new habit I have acquired is a side effect of the Adderall or just something I came up with on my own.  I started Adderall about a month ago and I am now on 40mg of the XR.  I love being on it…..I can concenttrate, stay focused and I’m doing great at work.  But my tongue is so tired that it’s about to do me in………..I press my tongue against my teeth incesssantly, or against the roof of my mouth……I chew on it unconsciously……….I also have TMJ, so maybe that’s just getting worse.  So, has anyone ever had this problem???

If the adderall is helping with focusing, I find it unlikely that it would be the main factor in a newer stim.  More than likely it’s an increase in your overall stress level resulting in behaviors to adapt.

I’ve taken Adderall (20mg) two to three times a day, daily, for 5 years.  My only side effect has been decreased appetite (that I have noticed), and that was only for the first year or so.

Maybe contact your dentist and ask for a special kind of night guard for the TMJ?  I know that helps a LOT from personal experience.

Good Luck!

Re: Chewing my tongue….b/c of adderall?
Adderall or any stim I’ve taken has given me jaw clenching, biting my cheek kinda stuff. I’m off it now, but mostly I would get that when took too much, either at one time or decided to extend my day by taking an extra dose.

For my $.02, it can be very useful, but use caution. It’s a powerful med, it’s no-bs habit forming, and it will mess with you over time if you have mood disorder issues or substance abuse. I really miss my stims sometimes. For all the pitfalls, they are the greatest if you need focus.

Re: Chewing my tongue….b/c of adderall?
I don’t chew my tongue, but I do notie that I will do the pressing of my tongue against the inside of my front teeth when I have only taken the “recomeded” dose. If I feel I need to take more than the recomended dose I am constantly sucking my tongue to the roof of my mouth and then for the next 2 days it hurts to eat much and/or sometimes even talk.
