topiramate in bipolar disorder

topiramate dosing

Basically, he’s gotten a lot of emails regarding his statement that Topamax was a total dud for bipolar disorder…

There’s also a link to the study where it says that Topamax + low-dose Risperdal = Valproate + low-dose Risperdal – Valproate-induced weight gain.

Re: Dr. Phelps and TOPAMAX: An Update
Care to email him and tell him most of the Topamax studies for bipolar have specifically excluded the people it was most likely to work for?

Since, like, he seems totally in the dark about that and stuff.

I have. I sent it months ago. I don’t believe he’s gotten to it, yet. When did I send that thing…?

ETA: I remember hearing him say that they went whole hog for Topamax at first, feeling so guilty about all the weight gain from other stuff only to have that backfire spectacularly. I can’t find it now….hold on: it says here that he’s suspecting it worsens bipolar just like antidepressants do, and we all know how he feels about those.

Re: Dr. Phelps and TOPAMAX: An Update
I find it interesting that he points out Topamax causes depression.  Depakote caused me to lean towards depression and my p-doc considered that a good thing.  The fact Topamax has had a similar effect is why we’re trying it on my Bipolar when I was originally given it for mirgraine and headache pain alone.  I was under the impression that depressed symptoms weren’t a bad thing in those of us with destructive mania.  So why Topamax wouldn’t work in those cases is beyond me.

Maybe I’m mising a connection somewhere.

Anyone here have any annecdotal experience to this effect?  I’d really like it to be true.

Edited to add: anyone have any sense as to whether depression with topamax might be more likely or more severe than it is with depakote?
