Health QuestionsCategory: QuestionsEffexor/Venlafaxine and Withdrawal
ChrisC asked 3 years ago

I have nearly come to the end of my supply of Venlafaxine 75mg per day, then stop and start 20mg of Cipralex/Escitalopram. What I want to know is will I get withdrawals from the Venlafaxine? Brain shocks and the such. Or will the Escitalopram cusion the Venlafaxine withdrawal?

Re: Effexor/Venlafaxine and Withdrawal
Yes.

LOL!  The Celexa should help, but probably won’t prevent the withdrawal nasties.  You might want to talk to your doctor about halving the 75mg dose for awhile as you start the Celexa.  (You can read some of the earlier threads for how people have done this.)

Re: Effexor/Venlafaxine and Withdrawal
Having just switched from 75 mg dose of effexor to Celebrex – I would recommend trying to taper it off while you start the Celexa.

You can get 37 mg pills from your doctor – and a lot of people have even gone so far as to buy empty capsules to ‘build’ their own smaller doses.

Personally, the withdrawal was disastrous for me, and I would do ANYTHING to avoid it a second time around.

Good Luck,
Penny

Re: Effexor/Venlafaxine and Withdrawal
I have found that most cross over of meds seems to be ok UNLESS you need a washout period. If you are able to cross taper it’s usually fine and nothing to worry about but coming off effexor with nothing to switch to was pure hell. I decided I didn’t need effexor anymore and tapered of it really slowly. I was told to do it over 2 weeks but I did it over six and thought I was going to die when I finally stopped it. You should be fine!!!!!  Smiley Smiley
