How sedating is Risperdal for you? I need an AP to handle hardcore anxiety and mixed episodes w/ extreme agitation. Seroquel worked fine but it was too sedating. Abilify a no-no, caused mixed episodes both times I tried it plus akathisia. Zyprexa I literally can’t remember. Too long ago.

Thanks

Re: How sedating?
At first it knocked me on my butt, but I wasn’t a zombie during the day.

And the sedative effects SO wore off. Bummers. But as a PRN the sedative stuff was still there. weird, huh?

Hey Kassi-

I’ve read a lot of people have this effect with Seroquel but this wasn’t the case with me. I stayed in zombieland the whole time I took it, which was about 8 months. Tdoc suggested maybe I should take Seroquel PRN for hardcore days but he’d run this by my pdoc.

Can Risperdal cause depression in some cases?

Re: How sedating?
Seroquel damn near killed me, e.g. severe respiratory distress that all the inhalers in the world couldn’t help.  That was a short experiment.

Abilify was also a short experiment, though not for the reasons we thought it would be: Pdoc assumed it would send me manic or mixed.  Instead, I went down hard and fast and couldn’t get back to the surface.  Too many memories of Seroquel, even if I was breathing (slightly) better.

Oh, I’m asthmatic, so I’m particularly sensitive to CNS depression, BTW.

Risperdal.  Interesting drug.  Same effect Kassi is talking about.  PRN for emerging mania – knocks me right out.  The couple of times I’ve had to take 2 week courses of it to break long standing full blown manias – barely sedating.

So maybe it is a function of where one is at with one’s illness as well as one’s reaction to the med.

Ultimately, I have found it to be a much better anti-manic for myself than Klonopin was.  My body processed Klonopin too quickly and I never managed to get good, REM sleep while on it.  I can, on Risperdal.

Hee. Seroquel is SO not an option for me. Can we say MANIA? Ohhh that was bad. A 1 day experiment.

Yep. It’s how I got put on Strattera, after failing Lamictal…I was catatonically depressed on Risperdal/Topamax/Neurontin.

Re: How sedating?
I am not sedated at all on 2mgs risperdal.
It’s been great for my anxiety, ruminations and paranoia.
