Health QuestionsCategory: TreatmentsLithium an adjunct?
Anonymous asked 3 years ago

Hi out there.  Has anyone noted an improvement in mood when Li has been added to their AD(s)?  It is supposed to have this effect as an adjunct, but I haven’t noticed anything.

Re: Lithium an adjunct?
I have no personal experience with AD’s. I take lith with lamictal. …But, here’s my 2¢ fwiw.

Lithium gets rid of those rock bottom suicidal urges. For the rest of your depression, it’s up to your AD to pull you out. That’s how I suspect it goes. But I could be off.

Re: Lithium an adjunct?
Lithium plus and antidepressant is the only thing that keeps me so I don’t kill myself/harm myself. I have been on AD’s for all of my adult life with little improvement in mood, no matter what brand or dose. Sometimes I would get improvement with a new one for a short time, only to have it “poop out” or whatever they call it when it seems like your AD is doing absolutely nothing. Finally, I was diagnosed as bipolar II and given Lithium. My mood is so much better and I feel for the first time in my adult life like I’m actually living. It is completely the Lithium too, because I stopped taking it for a few weeks (thinking it was making me sick, see my other thread if you’re interested) and I immediately spiralled down into an awful depression, was harming myself, planning suicide, etc and had to be put in the mental ward. They gave me Lithium again there (Lithobid to be exact) and I’m great now.

Re: Lithium an adjunct?
Rainygirl, what dose of Li are you currently on?  I’ve been on 300mg bid for about a week, and do feel some better.

Re: Lithium an adjunct?
I’m on 600 mg (I take 300 mg morning and 300 mg night).

Re: Lithium an adjunct?
Lithium isn’t adjunct treatment, it is first line treatment.

If anything is adjunct it’s your AD.

Seven- you’re right in most respects but hard core nutcases can’t take ADs.

Peace
