Health QuestionsCategory: TreatmentsLithium & suicidal ideation
paranoidandroid asked 3 years ago

Greetings,

What are you’all’s thoughts on lithium and suicidal depression?

Lithium of course is the classic mood stabilizer for Bipolar Disorder.  I myself have been on it along with some other stuff.

I’ve been told that Lithium primarily puts a roof above the mania, but that it also can help prevent the deep-deep suicidal ideation….even though it may not be so great at preventing “depression”/downs.

Is this accurate by your experience?

I was on lithium awhile back.  I seem to remember it doing just that — not preventing lows, or even my Depression, but it did seem to maybe keep me out of the deepest crashes….

Thoughts?  Experiences?

Thanks!

You don’t want to know about my lithium experience.

However, lithium is shown to be quite effective in reducing suicide.

Quote:

In a review of 22 studies—some including patients with bipolar or recurrent unipolar major depression—risk of death by suicide was reduced at least 5-fold, based on an informal comparison of pooled rates in treated versus untreated samples. Based on quantitative meta-analysis, the pooled risk of death by suicide was reduced nearly 9-fold (or by 89%) in patients who received lithium maintenance treatment compared with those who did not. The risk for suicide attempts fell nearly 10-fold in a compilation of 33 studies.

Re: Lithium & suicidal ideation
I can have suicidal ideation at either end of a depression or mania at the blink of an eye. For me I have fewer break throughs while on lithium compared to my previous med Depakote.

Re: Lithium & suicidal ideation
Lithium doesn’t stop my suicidal ideation when it is a symptom of mixed state episodes. Nor does it stop depression in it’s tracks. And it surely doesn’t stop the gentle voices that want to eliminate my life.

The answer is no (for me).

Re: Lithium & suicidal ideation
oddly enough, lithium does work as an anti-depressant for me. when i was depressed, my pdoc actually raised my dose, and lo-and-behold, i felt fine. now, i still dip sometimes but then i go back up.
