Hi,

Does Neurontin have good AD effects? I am currently taking Lamictal (no other meds) and it is not agreeing with me–bad skin problems, anxiety, aggressiveness, etc., and am looking to try something different.

I am BP2 and most of my time is spent battling agitated depression and anxiety. Also considering Trileptal.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Need advice
Neurontins BEST effects as far as MH goes are antianxiety. Some people get a lift, it’s not to be expected.

For agitated depression, Trileptal is better. I’ve been on them both (heck, Ive been on them both at once) and Trileptal is definately “stronger” in the chill pill regard.

Re: Need advice
neurontin kept my depression in check for a couple of years.  it also did wonders for my anxiety & rage issues.  since it’s not really getting the job done anymore,  i’m trying to see what lamictal can do for me.

i’ve also been on trileptal.  it made me so tense/agitated/anxious that i could barely stand it.  it was nearly impossible to turn my head from side to side, that’s how tight/tense my neck was.  but, i’ve never heard of it affecting anyone else like that.

Re: Need advice
Thanks to you both for the feedback. I’ve read that you can gain serious weight on Trileptal and I want to run like hell when I hear that. Still trying to shed the remainder of the 15lbs I gained from taking Lexapro. I know that’s a different class of drug entirely, but I’m still really wary when I hear about any kind of weight gain as a side effect. I find that some of these meds cause what I’ve seen on these boards referred to as “bloat.” I was on Lithium for a few months and it did the same thing to me–it was like someone infused me with water. I guess anything that effects the sodium channels in your brain could potentially have that effect.

Maybe it’s just me, but since I took the Lexapro, it seems that ANYTHING I take whether it be an SSRI or mood stabilizer makes me irritable, ragey and just downright miserable. The problem is anything that would calm me down also inevitably makes me tired. (I took two hour naps routinely while I was on Lexapro and STILL was able to sleep at night.)

I didn’t know Neurontin could just stop working! I thought that only happened with the SSRI’s.

Re: Need advice
Anything can theoretically just stop working, its just waaaaaaaaaaaay less likely to happen with anticonvulsants. When it happens repeatedly with ACs they call it multidrug resistance (this happens in a few other things too, but ACs are the only brain ones), and there’s a gene coded for it called MDR1. Creative, huh?

As for Trileptal and weight–it’s considered weight neutral. I lost 3 pounds or so on it…and that was in 2 weeks. Not trying. At all.

i didn’t mean to suggest that the neurontin stopped working.   neurontin’s powers did not shrink, my depression grew!!!
