Health QuestionsCategory: QuestionsSSRI and Stimulants for Bipolar
naozi asked 3 years ago

Hi, I’ve been recently diagnosed with BP II and have been in a state of depression for the last month and a half..  Cant seem to get out of bed and have very low energy levels..  I’m currently taking seroplex (10mg) and depakote (500mg) and was thinking of talking to my doc to add a stimulant like dexadrine to get my energy levels up..  Does anyone have experience with this?  Or the other option is to try a dopamine reuptake inhibtor like wellbutrin instead of seroplex…  Any ideas?

thanks

Re: SSRI and Stimulants for Bipolar
if the wellbutrin or effexor doesn’t work for you (I heard voices, couldn’t distinguish right from wrong) I was switched to prozac and ritalin with a hint of lithium.

hey derailed, how long have you been on that combo?  I’m thinking of giving up the SSRIs completely, but hear prozac might not be as harsh on the system?  might try and give it a go, becuase i dont think insurance covers wellbutrin (Zyban in france..)  Are you bipolar?  and does the ritalin push you in hypo mode at all?

Re: SSRI and Stimulants for Bipolar
I’ve been on the prozac and ritalin for about 5 years and it worked pretty good for me.  I am bi polar but never recognized the mania as anything but my true self shining through the shell that people recognize as me.  The lithium is about a month old now and it keeps me from being irritated and aggravated when I can hear more than one conversation.  Right now the ritalin is keeping me awake because lithium and prozac are sedating me.
