Health QuestionsCategory: Medicationsstarting topamax on Monday

I’m starting topamax on Monday for a mood stabalizer, but now I’m reading it doesn’t do much for mood? I’m in a panic most of the time lately. I’m bipolar II and I’m not manic right now (I don’t think) but I’m a ball of nerves and I can’t eat or sleep. He had me on depakote and while it worked for my mood, I had seriously slurred speech and basically lost my job because they thought I was on drugs.

Now I’m feeling anxious about starting topamax. I’m scared I’m going to wind up stupid with rotting teeth and I already have eating problems, I dunno if this is going to make it worse. I’m tired of trying different meds all the time, but I know thats part of all this.

Has anyone taken this as a mood stabalizer and actually had it work? We’re trying it because my dad is on topamax for his bipolar and it works for him and my mum is on it for migraines

It may or may not effect your mood.  As with all things, your mileage may vary.  I’ve seen people go manic as the mad hatter on the stuff, and I’ve seen crazy ass people go euthymic.  Don’t assume the worst going in: if you expect the drug will fail, it will.

Now, teeth.  I’ve had shitty teeth my entire life.  If it weren’t for “OCD dental care”, they probably wouldn’t be as beautiful to look at as they are.  But damn near every single molar is filled, regardless.  And I’m not talking one surface.  One has been root canaled 3 times, and is on its 2nd crown.  I have a crown on a front lower fang because I bit the tip off of it due to TMJ.

All of this happened PRIOR to going on Topamax.

Since Topamax, I have managed to crack my other lower fang due to TMJ (i.e., my bite is off and I periodically crunch a tooth instead of a cracker).  That’s it.  In SIX years.  No “new” dental work.  Just replacing old amalgam fillings with composite as they got shitty due to teeth/jaw clenching.  And the “re-do” on the root canal due to a bad dentist.

And this is taking into account that, when I’m manic (which was roughly about 2 of those 6 years), I forget to brush my teeth in the mornings.  (It’s one of my markers, what can I say?)

Now, everyone is different.  Ragemaxis has had problems with Topamax and teeth.  I have not.  You simply do not know, as you have not tried it.  So again, if you EXPECT it to fail, it inevitably will.

I was Rx’d Topamax for migraine.  I never assumed it did jack for mood until I got high on myself one year and tried to go off of it.  HA!  I’m never going to do THAT again.  I guess it was/is doing some double duty in my case….

One thing to mention, though: I could always tell when it wasn’t working: I could taste soda pop.  When pop is flat, the drug is working for me.  When it is fizzy, something else is invalidating the medicine for me.

Best of luck to you, and take your crazymeds.

Re: starting topamax on Monday
ok I’ve got my topamax. I’m starting out on 25mgs for a week, then 50. Basically increasing 25mgs a week until I’m up to 100mgs. He said to take it at bed time. I’m taking the first dose tonight

Basically my main concern is my memory. I’m dancer and I have to be able to remember choreography.

I’ll keep everyone posted one how I do with it

Re: starting topamax on Monday
I understand your fears because I always am anxiety ridden when faced with a new medication. But I’m working on getting over my trepidation. When it comes down to it, you just don’t know how a drug will affect YOU until you try it.

Topomax has been a good mood stabilizer for me. And with few side effects. I do have feet tingling, but really it’s very minor. And, incidentally, I can still drink carbonated water that I mix with fruit juice. Go figure.

If you read or have read my other recent posts you’ll realize that  at present I’m in the midst of some med tweaking. September has brought on its usual depression. But there has been absolutely no mention of dropping the Topomax, and the depression has not reached nearly the depths that it has in the past–so even though I’m adding on some things to it, I still believe it is doing something beneficial. During the summer it brought me down from a hypomania and kept me euthymic–I don’t really think I had  experienced that state in years.

Of course that’s one person’s anecdotal experience. But just to let you know. I was terrified of it. But it has treated me, and continues to treat me very well.

Re: starting topamax on Monday
You could ask him if you could titrate even slower. I started at 12.5 mgs per week and titrated that way.

If I didn’t mention it in this thread—I did have some very annoying side effects after each titration (sedation, mental slowness, memory problems)–but they disappeared within a week. And it was worth putting up with, for me. Once I was adjusted there was a calm and a clarity that I hadn’t had before. So if you start up and feel crappy, give it some time. And/or ask the doc if you can titrate more  slowly.

Good luck. I know for me, I really like this med. (And who really cares about fizzy drinks anyway!)
