Health QuestionsCategory: TreatmentsTegretol for mixed states?

Hey all,

I’m not doing so well right now. I’m pretty sure that I’m BPII with mixed states/dysphoria predominant and periodic depression. Possibly also ultra rapid-cycling, although that’s hard to seperate out from a mixed state for me. So that’s my baseline.

My current meds are:
1) low-dose Lithium (60-120 mg/day) – any higher and I get more anxious (and my kidneys don’t like it); lower and I get a full-blown mixed-state.
2) Klonopin (0.675 mg/day) – decent for dysphoria, but leaves me feeling a little blue
This combo is definitely way better than nothing, but there are still a lot of ups and downs.

I’d like to consider Tegretol, and have a couple of questions:
1) Does this have a good rep for mixed states?
2) How similar is it to Trileptal for bipolar? (I was on very low-dose Trileptal for a few weeks and found myself more agitated and also a bit cognitively blunted.)

Thanks for any input you might have!

Best,

Re: Tegretol for mixed states?
I posted to you upstairs, but in answer to your SPECIFIC questions:

1. I think a form of carbamazepine got the official nod for mixed states, though I could be wrong (SOOL will know). For me, it was a miracle drug.

2. FOR ME it and Trileptal were night and day. Tegretol WORKED and the only side effect I had was a day of headache when I raised the dose, until I got toxic on it and my bone marrow threw a hissy. Trileptal makes me feel like shit.

Yeah, Equetro (repackaged Carbatrol) just got approved for acute mixed states. I’m not sure about how carbamazepine in its various forms does for prophylaxis.

Thanks for the info. It’s good to know from my perspective (although it must have really been a disappointment for you) that Trileptal isn’t the same in effects/side-effects as Tegretol. (My pdoc insists that they’re basically the same… He also likes neurontin.)

Re: Tegretol for mixed states?
800 mg. has taken the edge off of my mixed state but has yet to blow it out of the water as hoped.
