Health QuestionsCategory: Treatmentstherapeutic dosage for lamictal?
DeLempicka asked 3 years ago

what is the range of therapeutic dosages for lamictal?  I’m on 100…which was working absolutely fucking fantastically, then I fell on Saturday morning.  Don’t want to do another titrate (they are hellish), but I also think that this may be a breakthrough depression of sorts, can’t really tell.

thanks

Re: therapeutic dosage for lamictal?
I think 100mg is probably the lowest I’ve seen people *sit* at for extended periods, although many find it works for awhile at lower doses (now maybe we’ll see a bunch of people swarm in and tell me otherwise!  Wouldn’t that be great?)

Upper end … I think 400-450mg is usually where it tops out for people unless they have epilepsy.  Although the prescribing info says there’s not much added value after 200mg.  Myself, I’m at 350mg and holding.  I used to think I’d go back down after a bit, but then I had a bit of cycling; now I’m not so keen on changing anything.

Re: therapeutic dosage for lamictal?
From what I’ve read around 200 mg. is about normal (that was doc’s magic number). I think the therapeutic dose is just that, therapeutic. If it’s 50 so be it. If it’s 400 so be it. I got screwed royally by my doctor because he kept upping my dose when I was feeling fine below 200. Next thing you know my nose is constantly bleeding and I have sores on my legs.

Don’t let ’em push it too far.

Re: therapeutic dosage for lamictal?
FWIW, I was seeing (temporarily) a clinic pdoc that insisted I go up to 200mg.  I could never get there without side effects.  I tried a slow increase plan, still couldn’t do it.

When I went back to my regular pdoc he was surprised that this temp. pdoc had tried to increase it, saying that 100mg has been found to be the optimal dosage.  Optimal for what? I don’t know, I am BP II with a mean depression.  And at 100, I am doing fine.

Re: therapeutic dosage for lamictal?
I just titrated up to 50 mg in am and 50 mg in pm and it is hell.  I have epilepsy and the neurologist is wanting me to get up to around 600mg per day.  I told him about the side effects of making me feel like crap for a few days, weakness, aching, sick at stomach, depression.  He said that I was taking a med that messed with my mind so I could expect to feel bad for a few days until my brain adjusted.  I am also Bipolar I so between the Neurologist and Pdoc they are hoping this is the miracle med that kills two birds with one stone.

Re: therapeutic dosage for lamictal?
thanks everyone.  yeah, I am basically trying to figure out if I am getting the absolute most out of lamictal as possible.
before I went on any med, I had no idea of exactly what it was like to feel good, normal, and be able to actually do the stuff I wanted to do.  I got a peek at that feeling these past two weeks (when the 100mg started kicking in), but then I had a lousy couple of days.  so basically I was wondering if a breakthrough depression (low-grade) is bound to happen, or if a slight dosage increase would knock that out as well.

I hope that this stuff keeps working.  it took long enough!

cheers
