Health QuestionsCategory: TreatmentsTitrating off Trileptal
Anonymous asked 3 years ago

I have been taking 600 mg. of Trileptal a day (300 in a.m., 300 in p.m.) and am now ready to go off of it.  I’m up to a good dose of Lamictal and also am taking Lyrica (prescribed for neuropathy) that is giving me a good lift in mood and reduction in anxiety.

So….. my old pdoc said to drop the Trileptal at 75 mg. a month (seems overly conservative).  The new pdoc says to drop down at 150 a month or even 300 if I feel okay.

I’m BPII, have never had a seizure.

What has been your experience with discontinuing Trileptal?    I was at a pretty low dose because at higher doses I would get low sodium.

Re: Titrating off Trileptal
I tapered down from 1200 a day…to zero…on a schedule even faster than your 2nd pdoc recommends.
That was at my doc’s directions.

Tapering gave me no problems.  I was glad to get rid of the 1-1/2 hrs of dizziness after each dose.

Re: Titrating off Trileptal
Hmmmm, that’s interesting.  I think I’ll try giving up my daytime pill (300 mg.) and keeping the nighttime one for a week or so and see if I notice any negative changes.

The two pdocs made these suggestions before I was taking the Lyrica.  Maybe I’m overestimated the strength of the Lyrica for depression/hypomania, but I’m going to give it a try and see if I notice much difference without the Trileptal. I don’t think I will since the dosage is so low.

I hate this trial and error. UGH!!

Thank for responding.

Let us know what happens, Edna.

I still don’t know what Trileptal did for me, because my cycling continued.

Thanks for your response, Adieu.

I tried to cut it down at 300 mg. a day and started feeling a bit down, so after a few days, I started taking it again.

I’ll give it a try again in a few weeks, month.  Maybe this time I’ll go down 150 at a time and see how it goes.

I have 300 tablets, so it will be easy to snap them in half.

Adieu I was on 1200mg right now & tapered down to 900mg, how quickly were you able to get off it?

Im not taking it as medical advice but I am curious to know, my doctor didnt really give me a time table he just said go to 900, if I feel ok then 600… like I am going to know when I feel “ok” ha ha.
