Re: topamax and seroquel?
my hubby is taking Seroquel, 100mg + 50mg PRN, he just started taking Topamax. His pdoc isn’t too worried about mixing the 2, just really watching the side effects. The seroquel gives him an appetite, but so far the Topamax hasn’t helped in his weight loss. He’s up to 100mg on the Topamax.

Re: topamax and seroquel?
I take Risperdal and Topamax right now, actually Lithium and Klonopin too.  There are no issues with taking an atypical anti-psychotic with an anti-convulsant they are completely different classes of drugs.  The only issue would be side effects, and most of Topamax’s side effects remit after the first few months and only get better over time.

In fact for me at least I have found that the anti-psychotics and the anti-convulsants compliment one another well.

Re: topamax and seroquel?
i have found a biochemical premise for why seroquel seems to really increase the cognitive side effects of topamax in a fairly short-acting way in some people (i.e. me, at least unless I hear from others but few people take it PRN like I do in conjunction w/ topa, and are in-tune with their rhythms)

but anyways, because the way topamax makes acetylcholineterase (sic) “cleanup” somewhat laggy in the brain, as seroquel works by causing a certain amount of acetylcholine to be converted into acetylcholine pre-synaptically this ends up causing … something … to happen which ends up producing additional cognitive discfunction above and beyond what topamax causes in sme people (aka the stupamaxes, the stupids) …

the good news is it appears to not be terribly long lasting meaning for sleep you’ll be ok by 2:00 in the afternoon or so so you’ll be  able to seem slightly less stupid at dinner parties,  and also there are some experimental treatments as what is happening is basically like alzheimers.

I tripped on this one after reading about 4 times that seroquel is contraindicated in cases of alzheimers where there is cognitive dysfunction and is being treated with acetylcholinestreaease inhibitor drugs which is the same issue (except not chronic, its induced) that is thought to cause the stupids with topa.

Now, I have two little theories on this one and probably I wont find any answers short of tricking a half dozen topamax users into my basement and cutting their brains open, and since i’ve been warned about that already (this is a joke, I repeat a joke, don’t call the police.) … anyways, never mind.

But … there is hope, its just probably not going to be of use to anyone right now, and at the rate we all flip me combos i’ll have given up looking before I find any a nswers, and we’ll all be on different drugs before a working solution is found.

Besides, if we had no side effects what the hell would we bitch about?   Like seriously?

I found a citation that said that topiramate was one of a few compounds associated with reduced “soman-induced epileptiform activity” in rats:

Effects of anticonvulsants on soman-induced epileptiform activity in the guinea-pig in vitro hippocampus.

Soman is an anticholinesterase, by the way.

Re: topamax and seroquel?
I’ve been taking Topamax and Seroquel for quite some time together and they work beautifully for me.  I haven’t had any problems with side effects or anything…  At the moment I’m on 400mg of Topamax (200am/200pm) and 300mg Seroquel (all pm).  I worked my way up to those doses over several months.

FYI – I have been pregnant, so I’ve been on half those doses for the duration of the pregnancy…  I’m only now going back the my pre-pregnancy doses.  I had no trouble before, during or after the pregnancy.

Hope this helps.  Smiley
