Health QuestionsCategory: QuestionsValium causing switch to depression?
Hot Like Wasabi asked 3 years ago

Two days ago, I took 10mg diazepam (split into two doses about 8 hrs apart) to knock down an acute anxiety attack (my first in a long, long time) which was coming hard on the heels of 2 wks or so of irritable hypomania.

I stay away from benzos as a rule — Ativan causes me to black out (while still functioning) while I’m taking it, and I’ve avoided Xanax for fear of dependency.

But this anxiety attack was over the top, and my pdoc thought this was the only way to knock it down.

Anyway, it worked for the anxiety, and that night I slept well for the first time in a long time (probably since the last time I took Ambien, but that’s another story).

Yesterday I was still pretty groggy & lethargic, stayed in my pajamas all day, and got exactly nothing accomplished (probably would have stayed in bed altogether if I didn’t have a two-year-old with a cold who needed caring for).

Today I’m feeling like I’ve bloomed into full-on, feel-like-I’m-moving-through-hardening-cement depression.

So my question is, do you think I’m still just clearing the diazepam from my system or have those two pills switched me into a different mood state altogether???

Any thoughts or personal experiences welcome.

Re: Valium causing switch to depression?
Valium has a half-life of 6-8 hours (link) and it has active metabolites. More here:
