Sensual oils have aphrodisiac qualities. In other words, the smell of these oils, and even when they come into contact with the skin, can arouse passion and sexual arousal in a person.

It could also be argued that sensual oils help a person to relax and calm down which may allow them to “get in the mood” for sensuality.

Here are a few to try out :

1. Sandalwood

Sandalwood essential oil is used in many cosmetic products to provide a base note fragrance. It has a sweet woody smell that complements other essential oil fragrances without overpowering them. The aroma relaxes and uplifting. It warms skin when used as part of a massage oil.

2. Rose

Most people associate roses with love and romance. They are the most gifted flower on valentines day. So it’s not surprising that the smell of roses in rose essential oil should trigger romantic and sensual intentions.

3. Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang is another fragrance distilled from the flower of the Ylang Ylang tree that is indigenous to south east Asia. It has a sweet, romantic scent that is often used to accent cosmetic products. The aroma is said to be uplifting and induce joy and happiness.

4. Jasmine

Jasmine essential oil is often described as an aphrodisiac oil. It has a sweet smelling fragrance that is said  to arouse feelings of love in people and even arouse the libido. In Asia and the middle east it has long had this tradition and is even said to be used to fragrance the bedroom on the first night of a newly wedded couples honeymoon.

5. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is said to have a sweet, spicy and warming aroma. It is thought to uplift and improve circulation. It is said to increase desire and some have claimed it helps with erectile dysfunction. It is a very strong oil so should be diluted with a carrier oil before applying to the skin. It’s also advisable to do a patch test before applying to the rest of the body.

6. Ginger

Ginger essential oil is a described as having a warm, spicy and woody aroma. It is energizing and uplifting and is considered a mild aphrodisiac. It is thought to improve circulation and some people even claim it can help with erectile dysfunction. However it is an extremely concentrated and strong oil so should never be rubbed on sensitive parts of the body. It should always be mixed with a carrier oil and a patch test should be done before using it on the rest of the body.

7. Neroli

This essential oil has a sweet citrus smell as it is steam distilled from orange flower blossoms. It is said to have a calming effect. Much like Jasmine, it has been traditional used at weddings and honeymoons to arouse the passions of the bride and groom and maybe even the rest of the wedding party.

8. Patchouli

Patchouli essential oil is a versatile oil that has an earthy woody aroma. It makes a good base note  when mixing with other essential oils and is good for the skin. So it’s ideal as a massage oil. The aroma is said to relieve stress and calm.
