Tetralogy of fallot: features

Tetralogy of fallot is a congenital heart disorder ( septal disorder), has four key features. Tetrology of fallot describes Ventricular septal disorders, and obstruction of blood flow from right ventricle to lungs through pulmonary arteries and aortic disorder with ventricular hypertrophy.

The four malformations of tetralogy of fallot

ventricular septal defect (VSD) : A hole or gap formed between two ventricles of heart, leads to mixing of pure (oxygenated) and impure (de oxygenated) blood. Usually the hole is single and large ; and it may be narrowed by hypertrophy of ventricles.

pulmonary stenosis : narrowing of pulmonary opening in the right ventricle is called as pulmonary stenosis. this leads to poor ejection of blood from right ventricle and pooling of blood in right ventricle.

override aorta : Usually aorta has its opening in left ventricle; where as in aortic override aorta is present behind both the ventricles, carries both oxygenated and de oxygenated blood.

right ventricular hypertrophy : enlargement of right ventricle is termed as hypertrophy. right ventricle becomes boat shaped in tetralogy of fallot.
