More and more people are enjoying the benefits of massage therapy, whether it is for just muscle aches or for specific health problems. Massage therapy is the manipulation of the soft tissue of the body-muscles, skin, ligaments and tendons of the body. Like in any fields of health care, there are different types of massage from gentle to the more active and intense. On a PC note: a person who gives the massage is no longer called a “masseuse” since it has sleazy connotations to the name, but are instead called “massage therapists”. Drinking a lot of fluids after a massage therapy session is recommended to flush out toxins from the body.


Acupressure/Shiatsu Therapy is the non-invasive method of acupuncture. It uses the same ideology of energy flowing through the body, called “Chi”. When the flow of energy is stopped or decreased, then health problems appear. Pressure by the thumb, finger, or elbow is applied to certain points on the body in order to restore the body’s Chi.

Myofascial Release/Deep Tissue Massage works on the myofascia of the body. Fascia is the lining that holds groups of muscle tissue together. All muscles have certain points where tension and stress gathers. A steady pressure is applied to these areas and then released. This can be painful but the benefits are well worth it of less stress and a feeling of relaxation.

Manual Lymph Drainage works on improving the lymph system of a person’s body. The lymph system is where immune cells are produced and bacterial cells are removed. When the body is fighting infections, the lymph nodes of the body may swell. In this type of massage, light pressure is applied in the direction of the heart to improve the lymph drainage and flow, thereby improving your immune system function.

Sports Massage is incorporated in all levels of sports, from the high school students to the professional sports groups. The purpose of the massage before the game or event is to invigorate and prepare the player for the game. After the game or event, the purpose of the massage is to ease the muscle and joint soreness, pain, and inflammation. Sports massage in between events or games is performed to limit injuries to the body and to keep the body in a better condition.

Swedish Massage is performed to improve the body’s circulation and blood flow. Six basic massage strokes are used in the direction of the heart. The different strokes consist of kneading, friction, rolling, vibration, percussive and tapping movements. This is the most common and classic type of massage performed. It is called the Swedish massage, because it has been incorrectly thought to have been created by a Swedish man, but was instead created by a Dutch man, Johan Georg Mezger.
