My child is two years old. Can I start brushing her teeth? Which toothpaste and what type of toothbrush can be used for her? Please tell me certain tips for her teeth care and regarding how and when to brush her teeth. Answer (by Dr. Chirag Semlani): Teeth brushing in children’s should be started earlier, parents should start brushing as the first tooth appears .A proper brushing technique for children’s can be demonstrated by your dentist. Toothpaste for children should be low in fluorides content as many children gulp a bit or more, it should be sugar free also. Many flavoured toothpastes for kids are available, you can choose any of those but just avoid toothpaste which is used by adults. Toothbrushes should be ultra soft bristled and small in size which can be easily inserted inside the mouth. Like toothpaste there are special toothbrushes available you can select any of those. Brushing should be done twice a day before breakfast in the morning and in the night before sleeping. Just follow simple rules of gargling with water after every meal, and consumption of tooth friendly food. Tooth friendly food items are: fruits (rich in vitamin  C like strawberries, apples, oranges) and raw vegetables (tomatoes, carrots, capsicum, cabbage) milk products (cheese, paneer and yogurt) popcorn without flavours only salted, nuts (almond, peanuts, walnuts) etc.
