Burning sensation in the esophagus, behind the sternum, is called as heart burn. Heart burn is mainly caused due to regurgitation of gastric acid. The painful, burning sensation in the chest, or throat is known as heart burn.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), causes prolonged heart burn for more than two weeks. Lower end of esophagus is not closed in case of GERD. This esophageal opening leads gastric acid to come back into esophagus and causes Heart burn.
